Horses are different to humans. Horses choose to send more and more blood to the muscles to maintain the level of exercise. That makes sense for an animal that's a prey animal, they will risk heat stroke to escape a predator. But this means horses are particularly susceptible to heat stroke during competition. Heat stress in horses is only a worry for those living or competing in hot countries right? Maybe it's time to think again. At Badminton over 15 years ago a cool spring was followed by a warm May weekend leading to grooms having to work very hard to get the horses' temperatures back down. In this episode you will find out what heat stress is, how the FEI has battled to overcome this ever persistant threat in international competition and how to recognise and treat heat stress. We cover the controversies surrounding aggressive cooling and the science behind why aggressive cooling works, including the question... to scrape or not to scrape?!
